OSHA's beryllium standard compliance dates (2018)

In March, OSHA delayed implementation of the new and highly anticipated guidelines governing occupational exposure to beryllium. Enforcement was planned to begin on May 11, 2018, roughly two months after the initial date the agency set last year. The extra time allowed OSHA to consider feedback from stakeholders aimed at simplifying and clarifying its requirements.

However, at the end of May, OSHA proposed to extend the compliance dates for certain requirements to Dec. 12, 2018. As of May 11, 2018, OSHA is enforcing only the following:

  • PELs in the general industry, construction and shipyard standards at §1910.1024(c), §1926.1124(c) and §1915.1024(c), respectively.
  • General industry exposure assessment at §1910.1024(d).
  • General industry respiratory protection §1910.1024(g).
  • General industry medical surveillance §1910.1024(k).
  • General industry medical removal at §1910.1024(l).

Don’t forget, Pinnacol has industrial hygienists on staff who can help you evaluate employee exposure to beryllium at your work site.
